What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea syndrome is a disease characterized by partial or complete occlusion of the airway due to loosening of muscles during sleep and gravitational pulling of the tongue and/or jaw.The complete obstruction of the airway for at least 10 seconds is called apnea, while partial obstruction of the airway related to decrease in the oxygen level is called hypopneas. The number of apneas and hypopneas can reach hundreds during the night.
What are the levels of sleep apnea?
The level of sleep apnea syndrome is determined by the sum of mean apnea and hypopnea for one hour's sleep. The number of apneas and hypopneas for an hour is called the apnea-hypopnea index and is shortly called AHI. In the table below you can find the AHI values corresponding to sleep apnea levels classified at three levels.
What are the effects of sleep apnea on people?
Untreated sleep apnea syndrome causes lack of oxygenation during sleep and poor quality sleep. While patients feel tired all day, they experience memory problems and also have hard time focusing on tasks. Over the years, repeated oxygenation problems can lead to more serious health problems such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension and cardiovascular problems.

For this reason, we recommend that people with serious snoring complaints, who feel tired or sleepy during the day and have problems with memory and focus, should definitely refer to a sleeping center and get themselves checked.
How do i know if i have sleep apnea?
Although sleep apnea syndrome can occur in anyone, factors such as age and weight increase the likelihood occurrence. From having a larger than normal tongue or uvula, a saggy uvula, fat depositions around the neck, nasal deviations to sleeping with an open mouth, having a narrower than normal and/or backwards shifted lower jaw many contributing factors can be counted for sleep apnea. The symptoms of the disease can be sorted as; continuous noisy snoring followed by the sudden cease of snoring, choking sounds originating from throat, awakening due to shortness of breath, morning headaches, an overactive bladder, daytime sleepiness, feeling exhausted throughout the day, having hard time focusing, intraoral-intranasal dryness and high blood pressure.

Since snoring is not perceived as a dangerous symptom, it is usually ignored. For this reason, the vast majority of sleep apnea patients are left undiagnosed and continue to live their lives with a serious health risk.
What is the relationship between sleep apnea and snoring?
Sleep apnea and snoring are interrelated events. Even though sleep apnea is accompanied by snoring in the majority of patients; this does not necessarily mean snorers are sleep apnea patients.

Snoring is the sound that is generated as a result of soft tissue vibrations due to rapid air flow. On the other hand, apnea is the complete blockage of the narrowing airway due to collapsed soft tissues. For this reason, it is natural to experience snoring just before an apnea attack. Snoring occurs as a result of narrowing of airway due loosening of the tissues. With the deepening of sleep, apneas and hypopneas start to occur.
How is sleep apnea treated?
The primary treatment method for sleep apnea syndrome is the use of a CPAP device that delivers air with positive pressure to airway of patients which is a widely accepted method. These devices usually require a power supply and the connection with the user is achieved through a mask and hose.

Patients with the difficulty in using such devices and mild-to-moderate patients prefer mouthpiece devices in the treatment of sleep apnea. These devices are aiming to keep the airway open either by shifting the lower jaw to a more frontal position or by stabilizing the user's tongue out of the mouth during the night.
Why should i use Dormio?
Sleep apnea syndrome is a disease with treatment options. The main problem here is that patients do not want to continue treatment due to device related difficulties and side effects. However, Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome not only effects the quality of life but also causes more serious health problems, therefore regular treatment is necessary.Dormio applies all the currently available treatment methods cumulatively but not excessively while holding your comfort on the forefront. The user places the device inside his/her mouth like a simple pacifier to support breathing during sleep.
How does Dormio work?
Dormio is a very ergonomic and soft silicone-made mouthpiece device. With its valve system, Dormio holds the user's tongue and jaw together by adjusting the intraoral pressure, without any discomfort. It prevents the jaw and tongue from collapsing, thereby eliminates the obstruction of airway which is known to cause apnea.
Is it appropriate to use Dormio in treatment of snoring?
Dormio's primary goal is to help patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apneas to maintain regular breathing by reducing the number of apnea-hypopnea they experience. In the sleep report we shared only a part of above, it is clear that snoring takes place just before and after each apnea attack. The intense breathing requirement induced by the pause of breathing during an apnea attack, causes excessive vibrations in airway tissues thereby increases the intensity of snoring.

Dormio related reduction in number of apneas and hypopneas accordingly reduces the severity and frequency of snoring. During the tests done with Dormio, reductions in both severity and frequency of snoring were observed.

For this reason, there is no inconvenience in the use of Dormio by people who have not had a sleep test but have snoring complaints, provided that the user acknowledges; Dormio is a device designed for the treatment of sleep apnea.
Is there a chance for Dormio to fall out of my mouth during sleep?
One of the main features that distinguishes Dormio from other treatment methods is that it does not require any additional discomfortable apparatus such as a hose or jaw /headband. Dormio perfectly stays in place throughout a night's sleep, thanks to its mouth fitting design. During our clinical tests, we would like to let you know that none of the patients experienced a situation such as Dormio falling out of mouth. In addition, to ensure that Dormio fits to your mouth and jaw structure comfortably; two different sized sizer accessories will be sent to you.

We recommend to those who have the problem of keeping Dormio in their mouth during sleep:

• Make sure that you push your tongue towards the tongue reservoir until the vacuum effect is felt. Dormio won't fall out of place as long as it is vacuumed with your tongue properly.

• Repeat the process if you feel that the vacuum effect is no longer available.

• Make sure that Dormio does not touch your pillow. In such a case, outside contact will cause the tongue vacuum to fail.

Who should not use Dormio?
Dormio is identified as safe to use by patients between ages of 18-70. It is not recommended to use Dormio if you do not fall between these age limits.

It is recommended that patients with severe sleep apnea do not use Dormio without consulting their physician. Dormio is not a substitute for CPAP for patients with severe sleep apnea. Patients who can not use the CPAP device under any circumstances, or who do not want to carry their device on short trips, can use Dormio as an alternative.

Dormio must not be used by patients with the following diseases and conditions.

• Asthma

• Lung cancer

• Heart failure

• Any cerebrovascular disease

• Central sleep apnea syndrome

• Temporomandibular joint dysfunction

• Excessive retching reflex

• Gum disease

• Patients with regular sedative use.

Is Dormio a disposable product?
No. Unlike some other products currently available in the market, Dormio is not disposible. Dormio is a mouthpiece device designed with a medical silicone. Device is designed to rest in patients mouth and help them breath during a nights sleep. We recommend a 6-month period of use, for both hygienical reasons and possibility of wearing-out, as it is permanently in contact with mouth tissues.
How to properly clean Dormio?
You can easily clean your Dormio by soaking it in boiling water for 3-5 minutes. You can also store Dormio in its protective case after washing it with hot water and drying it, then carry it wherever you want.
I have a severe sleep apnea. Would i benefit from Dormio?
In all of the patients with mild, moderate and severe sleep apnea who have participated in clinical tests done with Dormio, a decrease in the number of apnea attacks for a night was observed. In both apnea and hypopnea reductions up to 96% and 75% were measured for mild and moderate levels respectively. In addition, blood oxygen levels of all patients were increased. Among the patients with severe sleep apnea who have participated in our clinical study, although the results indicate a fall in AHI from 35.6 to 4.3 (88% success) we do not recommend use of Dormio for severe patients. For severe patients, CPAP devices serve as an absolute solution since the device increases the applied pressure until the apnea of the patient is zeroed. However, our goal is to provide the best solution to patients that are risking their lives and reducing their quality of life by rejecting to continue the treatment. For this reason, we also want patients with severe level apnea to try Dormio who have dropped using the CPAP device or any other treatment modalities. Dormio may also serve as a short-term alternative for severely ill patients who do not want to carry a CPAP machine on short trips.
Is it safe for patients with not only sleep apnea but also other respiratory diseases to use Dormio?
No clinical tests have been conducted on the use of Dormio by patients with not only sleep apnea diease but also other respiratory problems such as asthma, COPD, etc. Therefore, use of Dormio is not recommended to these patients.
Is Dormio refundable in case of dissatisfaction?
Dormio falls into the category of non-refundable products due to its contact with body fluid during use. Since unpacked products are considered as used, they are also non-refundable.
